If you aren’t familiar with Letterboxd (where have you been?!), I’ll clue you in. It’s an app that allows you to logged your movies watched, rate them, and also share your thoughts or “reviews”. It’s coined as an “online social cataloging service for film”. In addition to this you can save movies to a watchlist and also curate your own lists. I like to think of those as “playlists but for movies”. It’s become widely known in the film community and also online, being especially hot for it’s famous “favorite four” interviews. Many actors and even directors also have accounts on Letterboxd, giving it some real recognition and notoriety. I promise you want to be here!
This post, nor I, have any affiliation with Letterboxd, but I have become a real fan of the app over the past few years. I started using it some years ago when I realized I couldn’t remember what movies I have seen or hadn’t seen. I would get 30 minutes into a film only to realize that I had seen it already! I have nothing against re-watching a movie, but it is quite jarring to know that you’ve been watching so many movies that you can hardly remember it. Queue in my discovery of Letterboxd that helped me keep track of what i’ve seen, what I want to see, and what I may need to see again. Now, it’s become a big part of my movie watching routine and a place I can go to for discovery, thought-provoking comments, and my own “entertainment brain organization.”
With every great resource, there are also it’s downfalls, so I don’t want to make it seem like this is the best of the best. It’s just the app I know and that I use. One of my only qualms about it is that there does seem to be a certain audience that takes up a lot of space in this app that is, to me, a bit off putting. There are many self-made critics it seems that want to share their two-sense on movies and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be prepared for a movie you love, maybe even your favorite movie, to be torn to shreds on this app. If you aren’t easily triggered and can breeze past those comments (which I really try to do), then I think you’ll love it here. Hey, maybe we can even get more people on the app who have no problem just enjoying things or giving good criticism. Also, just so you know, there ARE a lot of good reviews and thoughts on here, but like with any kind of “forum” there are some people who love to troll or hate. I guess it’s apart of this online world.
With all this being said, I think you should come check it out over on Letterboxd and if you do, why not follow me?! If you need a bit of convincing, fine! Here are 3 reasons why I think you should join me:
- I don’t post reviews! I will post remarks here and there, but just for you to know if I like it or not. I promise I won’t inundate you with film lore or pretentious details, only my thoughts. We’ll just vibe over here and I’m okay if you disagree with me. Just be nice and I’ll be nice back!
- I make movie lists! I promise that eventually there will be a list for everyone and when that time comes, you’ll want to say you’ve been there to witness the creation of my madness. Honestly though, I have been making some pretty interesting curations on there that I think deserves some recognition.
- Broaden your horizons! Look, I think we can all use a little bit of expansion when it comes to movies we watch. I have certain genres or types of films I love and I generally know when I will love something, BUT I have made it a challenge to myself to watch a little bit of everything so you can see me do that on there. OR Just hold me accountable for not doing it and give me a recommendation or two 🙂
Here are some of the movie lists you can find on my account (they are growing and I will continue to make more):
How wild to think that I wasn’t even supposed to be here. Yet, I am. How wild to think that someone like you would be here too. How wild to think that this was supposedly the wrong place, the wrong time, but you’re the perfect person I never thought I’d meet.
(Also, as a side note I wrote a post on movies with the invisible string theory that you should read here!)
Cult Classics, but From a Millenial
Movies you watched while your parents left you at home unattended.
It’s in the title.
When you just hit play because you’re tired of scrolling but it turns out to be better than you expected.
Unless you don’t want your whole perspective of life to be changed.
They just don’t get it, like we get it.
Look, I hope this was convincing enough for you to follow me on there. It’s just a simple tap of the button and I am really wanting to have some kind of community over here. I’ll be honest, it’s lonely writing for no one ❤
